Hello to all. I am a basic video maker planning to learn MOTION. My Mac is an older version with this configuration:I have contacted the local service provider and was informed that I can, by adding 2x8 GB of ram have a memory of 24GB. I will be content to work with 2D only as the limitations of my system do not permit 3D work.I was advised to buy an older version of Motion 5 but the APP store serves me the option of purchasing only the latest version 5.3.2.Can I purchase this app and get going? Any guidance will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.Regards and take care,Dr. Hi,According to the App Store Motion requires OS X 10.11.4 or later. That's El Capitan.

To see that information open the App Store then use the search field top right corner of the window to do a search for Motion.Your Mac is runing Yosemite v10.10.4 according to your screen shot. When the window opens for the Motion app look on the right under Information. You can upgrade to El Capitan v10.11.Or, see if your Mac can upgrade directly to macOS Sierra 10.12 In any case, make sure to backup your important data prior to upgrading. Both upgrades are free. Used Motion on a 8GB Ram system no flaws.More Ram is nice-to-have, but not mandatory. Thanks for your reply.
My work is basically to express myself through YouTube videos and I am working with FCPX since 2011. Reading about difficulties faced by FCPX users when ElCapitan was introduced, I refrained from doing the upgrade.

Though the APP store was greeting me with the offer of a free upgrade to macOS Sierra, I have been wary of doing it for the same reason.I wonder whether I would be allowed to purchase the previous version of motion Motion 4!If that isn't allowed I guess I should make the move to macOS Sierra and hope my ageing Mac will creak along!Regards and take care.Dr. Hello Karsten. Glad to see your answer. I am also apprehensive about your posts because the information they contain are overwhelming.Glad that you have been to my other post related to this subject.I am yet on FCPX 10.2.1 and am finding that the working has slowed down significantly. I edit with background render turned off. I don't at all mind this 'slow' work as, in your words, I am not working for the press!Should I increase my ram from the present 12 to 24 and upgrade to macOS Sierra, can I update FCPX to the latest version or do I have to purchase the app once more?Until a little while ago, the upgrade option for FCPX was active on my APP store page but now it isn't. I can find FCPX under the 'purchased' tab and has this active button 'OPEN' at the right margin.

When I clicked upon this button it just took me to the application but I found that there are no more updates being on offer!Does this mean that I am stuck with this version of FCPX? Will this version be able to handle Motion 5.3.2?Please bear with my weak knowledge of these matters and guide me.Regards and take careDr. Looked up the system requirement for the latest version of FCPX and read but could not understand this:Though I could not understand the details, based upon the graphics card requirements, I am forming this opinion that my system cannot handle the latest version of FCPX.If this is so, I would like to know whether to go ahead or not!Along with extra memory, I could upgrade to macOS Sierra, purchase Motion 5.3.2 and stick with the present 10.2.1 version of FCPX. In such a milieu, can I carry on my video works?Regards and take careDr. Somanna wrote: the risk of buying a pre-owned Mac, could a new Mac Mini help me to have a better output? I just do not know what a Mac Mini does but you seem to do 4k video editing on it!yep, used hardware can be a risky business.a) Apple itself offers refurbished Macs (don't know if this is true for India), incl.
All Apple guarantee b) there are specialised re-sellers, which offer checked used Macs (don't know if this is true for India), incl. A shop's guarantee A MacMini is a 'headless MacBook' = simple hardware, no display (=add to shopping list), no keyboard, no designated GPU (lucky me, the CPU-integrated one is supported), only models up to 2012 allow Ram-upgrade; I swapped the lame HDD to a fast SSD (I'm a tinkerer ?), and use two ext SSDs and a little Raid for my 'daily business'.Do I recommend this set-up? Not for business use. Too many 'moving parts'.Does it work? Friends with latest, much much faster PCs and Adobe Premiere get a jaw drop when I'm showing them my junkyard.

All I do is: keeping my system clean & lean; distribute files on several drives; using FCPX as intended then, a 'tupperbox' can handle 4k, MultiCam, etc. Yes, I can imagine me a 'better' system. Just have to win the lottery.
You are rich Karsten. You spend a lot of time in writing extremely informative posts helping many who are the deep waters of video editing.Anyway, your own wisdom has enabled you to churn out 'jaw dropping' performances with the resources you have now that you didn't have, say, 2 years back! I am sure that in another 2 years time things will be better for you because those who water others will themselves be watered. As for me, since I lack your skills and knowledge, it will be tough to get out a 'Karsten-like' performance were I to buy a Mac Mini.I have already 'won the lottery' and am planning for go for the 5k 27 inch iMac having 2TB fusion drive and pray with a smile that when you win your lottery you will be able to buy the beast iMac Pro and all that is in your heart. Thanks once again for your invaluable help.Regards and take care,Dr. Apple Footer. This site contains user submitted content, comments and opinions and is for informational purposes only.
